Today’s tasting note is dedicated to Crizia, a varietal Vermentino di Gallura, produced by the family-owned Cantina Atlantis in Berchidda, at the heart of Gallura. This is another excellent expression of Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, combining the variety’s hallmark freshness and minerality with a remarkably pronounced saline character that gives the wine a distinctive personality.
Cantina Atlantis is a young but highly promising estate that has quickly established itself thanks to its focus on quality and meticulous vineyard work. Based in Berchidda, one of the historical centres of Vermentino di Gallura, the winery cultivates around 16 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Vermentino and Cannonau.
Berchidda has become one of the reference points for Vermentino in Sardinia, thanks to its weathered granite soils, excellent drainage, significant diurnal temperature variation, and the constant influence of Mediterranean breezes. These conditions allow Vermentino to achieve remarkable aromatic precision while preserving freshness and elegance. Crizia is one of the estate’s two white wines. Compared with the more ambitious Clos, it offers a fresher, more immediate interpretation of Vermentino, highlighting purity of fruit and drinkability without sacrificing complexity.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Crizia is produced exclusively from Vermentino grapes grown on relatively young vineyards—less than twenty years old—trained using the Guyot system on the southern slopes of Monte Limbara, between 200 and 300 metres above sea level.
The vineyards grow on the characteristic decomposed granite sands of Gallura, enriched by small amounts of clay. These well-drained soils, together with the warm Mediterranean climate and the cool nights descending from Monte Limbara, favour slow and balanced ripening, preserving both aromatic freshness and acidity.
The grapes are hand harvested between mid-September and early October, with yields maintained below 80 quintals per hectare.
Once in the winery, the grapes undergo destemming followed by approximately 24 hours of cold skin maceration, allowing a gentle extraction of aromatic compounds before soft pressing. Only the free-run juice is used for fermentation, which takes place in stainless steel tanks at approximately 15°C using selected yeasts to preserve the varietal’s delicate aromatic profile. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine remains in stainless steel for several months before a short period of bottle ageing prior to release.

Tasting Profile
- Appearance: Pale lemon with delicate greenish reflections.
- Nose: High aromatic intensity with a refined bouquet of orange blossom, white flowers, Scotch broom, green almond, toasted almond, yellow apple, white peach, melon, pineapple, candied pineapple, lemon zest, candied ginger, together with delicate notes of wet stone, fresh grass and subtle Mediterranean herbs.
- Palate: The wine is dry, with medium(+) acidity, 13.5% alcohol, and a medium(+) body. The texture is generous yet remarkably refined, combining roundness with vibrant freshness. The palate faithfully mirrors the aromatic profile found on the nose, while a pronounced saline minerality adds depth and tension. The characteristic slight bitterness of Vermentino contributes further complexity and length.
- Finish: Medium(+), persistent and remarkably clean, with lingering saline, mineral, almond, and delicate grassy-minty notes that reinforce the wine’s freshness.
Final Thoughts
Crizia is an excellent example of what Vermentino di Gallura can achieve when elegance and precision are placed at the centre of the winemaking philosophy. It captures all the classic characteristics of the denomination—citrus fruit, white flowers, almond, granitic minerality, salinity, and the typical slightly bitter finish—while presenting them in a particularly harmonious and approachable style.
Its greatest strength lies in its balance. The wine combines freshness, structure and aromatic generosity without ever becoming heavy, making it immediately enjoyable while still offering enough complexity to reward more attentive tasting. The saline finish, together with the subtle mineral tension derived from Gallura’s granite soils, gives the wine a distinctive identity and remarkable gastronomic versatility.
Although Crizia has sufficient acidity and structure to evolve gracefully for four to five years, it is undoubtedly at its finest during its youth, when its floral and fruit-driven aromas are at their most expressive. Serve it well chilled, ideally at 6–8°C, to fully appreciate its vibrant freshness.
In terms of food pairing, Crizia is an outstanding apéritif wine, but it truly shines at the table. Its combination of freshness, salinity and medium(+) body makes it an excellent companion for fish dishes that combine strong aromas with a fatty note, like grilled prawns, crostini with bottarga, or frittura di paranza. Its slightly richer texture also allows it to pair beautifully with roasted grey mullet (muggine) or other medium-fat Mediterranean fish, where its acidity and saline finish perfectly balance the richness of the dish.
