On a hot summer day, what is really needed is a white wine that combines refreshment, balance with easy-breezy nonchalance. Today’s tasting note is therefore dedicated to Akenta Cuvée, a Vermentino produced by Santa Maria La Palma in the area of Alghero, in north-west Sardinia.
While this wine does not qualify as Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, the Vermentinos produced in north-west Sardinia — such as the previously reviewed Tuvaoes — represent some of the island’s most compelling alternatives to Gallura’s more famous expressions. Here, limestone-rich soils, sea breezes and the influence of the Mistral wind create wines of freshness, minerality and aromatic precision.
Santa Maria La Palma is one of Sardinia’s most important cooperative wineries. Founded over fifty years ago, it now counts more than 300 growers, who cultivate around 800 hectares of vineyards. Its size allows the winery to work with a broad range of grape varieties and styles while maintaining consistently high quality across different price points.
Akenta Cuvée may not be the estate’s most ambitious white wine — a couple of future posts will be dedicated to some of its more complex bottlings — but it is certainly one of its most representative. It is a fresh, fruit-forward and approachable Vermentino, capable of combining elegance with immediate drinkability.
Vineyard and Winemaking
Akenta Cuvée is produced exclusively from Vermentino grapes grown by the winery’s member growers in the Nurra plain, one of the most important viticultural areas around Alghero.
The vineyards are trained using Guyot pruning and grow on limestone-clay soils, constantly exposed to the cooling influence of the Mistral and the sea breezes coming from the nearby coast.
These conditions favour the production of grapes with excellent concentration, balanced ripeness and pronounced mineral character. Warm sunny days are tempered by cooler evenings, helping to preserve acidity and aromatic complexity.
Harvest takes place manually between the end of August and the beginning of September, during the coolest hours of the morning. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are immediately cooled before undergoing gentle pressing.
Only the free-run juice is used. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures using selected yeasts. Following fermentation, the wine remains in stainless steel for several months on its fine lees, enhancing both aromatic complexity and textural richness. After a brief period of bottle ageing, the wine is released onto the market.

Tasting Profile
- Colour: Pale lemon with delicate greenish and almost silvery reflections.
- Nose: The wine displays a medium(+) intensity bouquet dominated by ripe fruit and floral notes. Aromas include orange blossom, Scotch broom (a classic Vermentino marker), lemon, lime, peach, apricot, melon and pineapple. These fruit notes are complemented by hints of marzipan, sweet spices such as candied ginger and vanilla, and a delicate touch of fresh mint.
- Palate: Dry, with medium(+) acidity and 13% alcohol, creating excellent balance and freshness. The wine is medium-bodied, offering an attractive combination of roundness and drinkability. While generous in texture, it remains lively and elegant thanks to its refreshing acidity and subtle chalky mineral grip. The palate faithfully mirrors the aromas perceived on the nose, enriched by a delicate note reminiscent of orange blossom honey.
- Finish: The finish is medium(+), persistent and clean, with the slight bitter almond note that is often characteristic of quality Vermentino.
Final Thoughts
Akenta Cuvée is an elegant and refreshing Vermentino that never loses sight of its generous fruit character. This balance makes it a wine capable of appealing to both seasoned wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.
Wine lovers will appreciate its layered aromatic profile, where fruit is complemented by floral, herbal and spicy nuances. Less experienced drinkers, on the other hand, will enjoy its effortless drinkability and harmonious balance between freshness and texture.
While simpler than more ambitious Vermentinos such as Tuvaoes or Spèra, Akenta Cuvée succeeds precisely because of its accessibility. It is the kind of wine that feels perfectly suited to an apéritif on a warm Spring or Summer evening, offering immediate pleasure without sacrificing character. Its value is also remarkable. At just over €10, it delivers a level of quality that is difficult to match.
This is unquestionably a wine to enjoy young, when its fruit and freshness are at their most expressive. Nevertheless, it should comfortably retain its balance and aromatic appeal for up to three years after release.
At the table, Akenta Cuvée pairs beautifully with raw seafood, sushi, oysters, clams, and crustaceans, whose natural sweetness complements the wine’s aromatic profile. It would also be an excellent companion for a platter of crudi di mare, one of the purest expressions of Mediterranean cuisine.
Akenta Cuvée may not be the most complex Vermentino in Sardinia, but it perfectly captures one of the variety’s greatest virtues: the ability to combine freshness, charm and Mediterranean character in a glass that always invites another sip.
